13/? Merlin Edits
We are so unknowing of what eternities fall before us;
I think it’s interesting how we - the characters - the show - humanity - thinks of mortality. Even Merlin, who had heard of the Camlann prophecies and knew that Arthur would meet his end there didn’t really believe it. To him, Arthur was a constant forever who would bounce back like he did after every ailment that had threatened him before. Beyond that, once Arthur is truly gone, Merlin has little idea of what it means to have pledged himself to wait and how many years he’s silently and unknowingly promised.
What eternity they had already shared - the ten years of serving and protecting and befriending and the long days and nights. Well those felt like an eternity while they were being lived (waiting for Arthur to take a breath after Merlin had once again healed him with magic, waiting the long night Arthur held vigil for his father, waiting for the right moment to let the secret of magic tumble from his lips). After one, five, ten, fifty years of waiting for Albion to once again need Arthur, Merlin was forced to redefine eternity.
